Football West Honours Louis Prospero and Mel Moffat

Former Football Hall of Fame Western Australia committee members Louis Prospero and Mel Moffat have been elected as a Life Members of Football West.

The pair joined an elite band of some of the most influential figures in West Australian football when chosen by Football West at their Annual General Meeting on March 23.

“Congratulations to both Louis and Mel on becoming Life Members of Football West,” said incoming Football West chief executive Jamie Harnwell. “They have both made telling contributions to football in the state over a long period of time and this acknowledgement is richly deserved.”

Louis has been actively involved in football across six decades. He took up refereeing at the age of 17 and rose from juniors through State League to the National Soccer League’s Referee Panel (1996-2000). He also officiated in numerous games involving visiting teams, amongst them Singapore, Cerezo Osaka and West Ham United.

Louis served the Referee Commission as a Recruitment and Retention Officer between 1998 and 2002. He was elected President of the Soccer Association of Western Australia in 2002 and worked to unite the various football bodies into the present day Football West.

Between 2002 and 2020 Louis was the Chairman of the Hall of Fame. He played an active role in the operations and organisation of numerous events at which over 150 members of the West Australian football community were recognised with induction.

Mel championed West Australia football for over 40 years. As a journalist for ‘the West Australian’ newspaper (1983-2003), he promoted the strengths of the State League, State teams, Perth Kangaroos and Perth Glory while also highlighting the achievements of West Australian players, coaches and referees.

Mel’s devotion to and belief in the local game then lead to a 20-year stint on the committee of the Hall of Fame. His high-quality research skills and in-depth knowledge of West Australian football were integral in the assessment of individuals who gained induction into the Hall of Fame.

While with the Hall of Fame Mel managed ‘the Fame Game’ newsletter, wrote extensively for the volunary organisation’s website and was an active member of the team which organised and hosted numerous events. Additionally, he has written for Football West, Soccer West Coast and Perth Glory.

Louis and Mel take the number of former or current Hall of Fame committee members to be granted Life Membership of Football West to seven ; the others being Julius Re, Bob Brown, John O’Connell, Penny Tanner-Hoath and Richard Kreider.

Back in 2011 Football West also formally recognised former Hall of Fame committee members Alan Beale, Roger Males, Peter Dimopoulos and Barbara Gibson amongst a large group who had been inducted as Life Members of either semi-professional, amateurs, juniors, womens or referees bodies.

That same year another former Hall of Fame Committee member, Frank Miller, became the first West Australian to be elected as a Life Member of the Football Media Association of Australia.
