Samantha Kerr’s Goal-den Record

Perth-born Samantha Kerr has claimed outright the mantle of Australia’s greatest female goalscorer of all-time after netting in this evening’s Olympic Games contest with the United States of America. The 27-year old striker’s 17th minute finish was her sixth goal of the tournament and the 48th of her international career, a tally one more than fellow West Australian Lisa De Vanna.

Kerr, capped 99 times by the Matildas, now sits just two goals shy of Socceroo legend Tim Cahill, who found the back of the net 50 times in 108 international appearances. Unfortunately, Kerr’s stunning strike was not enough to nab the Matildas their first-ever Olympic medal, with the United States taking bronze home from Tokyo by a 4-3 scoreline.
