Socceroos Qualify for Fifth Successive World Cup

Australia have qualified for a fifth consecutive World Cup finals tournament after defeating Peru in their intercontinental play-off. Substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne made the decisive save as Australia out-shot Peru 5-4 on penalties after the game remained tied at nil-all after extra-time.

The shoot-out win brought to an end a marathon qualification campaign that stretched across 1,008 days and saw Australia play twenty games, just four of which were on home soil. The Socceroos have been drawn in Group D alongside France, Denmark and Tunisia at November’s World Cup in Qatar.
